What equipment is required?

Skates must fit like a shoe and have good support around the ankle, yet not be too tight as to restrict blood flow to the feet. DO NOT BUY SKATES WITH TOO MUCH GROWING ROOM - This causes wobbly ankles, tripping, and breaks down boot support. We HIGHLY recommend skates that lace up for good support. Whether skating indoors or outdoors, dress for warmth by layering your clothing. As you get warm, you may wish to discard a layer. Comfort and ability to move freely are also very important. We suggest close-fitting but not tight pants. Sweatpants or warm-up pants are ideal. Your feet will feel best if you wear one pair of lightweight socks or tights. Bulky or thick socks may limit the support provided by your skates and create "bumps" inside your boots, making them uncomfortable. Make sure when fitting your skates that your toes can wiggle but your heel does not slide up and down or around once your foot is properly laced in the skate. Remember gloves or mittens! Learning to fall is an important part of ice skating, and your hands will feel much better if you are wearing gloves or mittens. Learn to Skate and Canskate programs also require a mandatory CSA approved hockey helmet. A bike helmet is NOT acceptable.

How do I take care of my skates?

Skates should be sharpened right after they are purchased and after approximately 20 hours of skating. Skates should be sharpened by a recognized figure skate sharpener. Please note you should always sharpen your skates no later than 1 week before any competition or test day. Rubber skate guards should always be used when you are walking on your skates off the ice surface. These guards should never be left on your skates for extended periods of time as it will cause your blades to rust and this will ruin your sharpening. After you have finished skating always thoroughly dry your blades and boots with a soft absorbent cloth or a chamois. When storing your skates always use cloth skate guards to help prevent your blades from rusting. Never leave your skates in a locker or a bag. This will not allow the skates to dry properly and will cause the boot to become moldy and/or break down very quickly. Instead always bring your skates home take them out of the bag and let them dry at room temperature.

Is there any fundraising involved?

Yes, in order to keep our costs down, we will have a couple of small fundraisers throughout the season. More information will follow.

Can I join anytime?

Yes, registration is ongoing throughout the program; we will just pro-rate the fee depending upon the number of sessions remaining. HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE: If we do not get sufficient enrollment in each program, SSFSC reserves the right to cancel that program.

Is this club for both female and male members?

Absolutely! Even if your child was planning on joining hockey later on, learning to skate properly without all that equipment will better prepare them!

What is your policy on refunds of skating fees?

We DO NOT refund after your child has been skating for a couple of sessions unless due to medical reasons and a medical certificate is supplied. When we decided on yearly fee rates, it is based upon a certain number of enrollments in each program and if it is feasible as a club to continue to offer these programs. We trust you will understand our position on this.

Policy on cancellation due to weather?

We do not guarantee that any ice cancellation due to weather can be rescheduled nor will it be refunded. We will make every attempt to find another time however this is not always possible.

How will I know if a session has been cancelled?
